I’m back in the mountains.
It’s the place I come to when I’m at a crossroad; it’s also the place where I realized I wanted to be a writer.
Of course, my mom had predicted this a long time ago, but it was only when I was up here, did I truly accept it.
When I’m here, my favorite place to write is in the Glass Room downstairs. It has three giant plain glass windows, and it is through these windows that I can see the mountains beyond, the valleys and between those: the lake.
I don’t know if it’s the clarity of the glass that instills such clarity of thought, but I love that in this room I can see things for what they truly are.
Being a city girl, as a child – as an adult – I always wondered what it was about nature that attracted so many people.
And I got my answer in 2015 when I was struggling in fashion. Back in the day when getting a job after graduation defined your status in society – accepting defeat was unthinkable. Even if it meant being unhappy in what you did.
Which is what happened to me. Not only was I unable to secure a single internship, but towards the end of my nonexistent fashion career I was completely miserable. Unable to conform to society’s expectations; unable to accept that I didn’t want to be in fashion anymore.
Lost. Miserable. Defeated. Unhappy. Scared.
I came here.
Sometimes, in an ever changing, fast paced world, where everything is measured by the value it can bring, our only chance of acceptance is in nature. Because it is only in nature, where its value is intrinsic, that we can find value in ourselves.
No major epiphanies, just the truth. Two days into the mountains – away from the city’s chaos – and I knew I had to accept it.
Lovely! Came straight from the heart, I can tell :*
